North Presbyterian
Church 
North Presbyterian Church is an informal, diverse, inclusive, 90
member urban church on the north side of
Kalamazoo, Michigan. One third of its members are
African American and one half of its parishioners
are people with a severe and persistent mental
illness.For nine years North Church has had a
special ministry with and for people with a
mental illness. It sponsors the Togetherness
Group, a weekly activity and enrichment group for
people of the church and the community who have a
mental illness. People with a mental illness are
represented on all the groups and boards of the
church. North Churchs membership also
includes social workers, therapists, teachers,
medical professionals, an attorney and retired
persons from a variety of backgrounds who
continue to be active in the community. North
Church has one Church School class of up to 5
children that meets during the worship service.
There are 17 people in the congregation who work
full time. Over half of North Churchs
income comes from the Presbytery
of Lake Michigan and other Presbyterian and
non-Presbyterian churches and individuals.
